Journal 2: There is a new issue of L&L that hit the Internet this week, February 2010. Journal 2 comes from this issue: "Using Podcasts to Develop a Global Perspective," by Brad Maguth and Jeff Elliott.
Journal 3: As next week is a furlough day, I will provide journal 3 as well. It's from the same issue, "Keeping the Peace," by Matt Levinson.
As I said in class, you are more than welcome to look for your own articles in L&L or any other journal that deals with technology and education.
This Week's Question: What is the best book you ever read for school? Is it different from the best book you have ever read?
The best book I ever read in school would be Roussea's Discourses. It is a critic on Liberalism in the classical sense. It is also the best book I have ever read period. Thankfully I was required to read it while at Cal.
ReplyDeleteThe best book I have read in school was "Founding Mothers: The Women Who Raised Our Nation" by Cokie Roberts. I love history.
ReplyDeleteGreat Gatsby was my favorite book in school and my favorite book that I have ever read was Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.
ReplyDeleteThe book that is the most memorable to me is "The Grapes of Wrath."
ReplyDeletemy favorite 2 books were House of the Spirits and 100 Years Of Solitude!
ReplyDeleteThe best book I have ever read for school would have to be The Five People You Meet in Heaven.
ReplyDeleteI loved reading The Sun Also Rises for a lit class here at San Marcos. I've read a few good history books too, but I love reading fiction, and if I can read it for school, that's even better :)
ReplyDeleteBest at school would be nation of fear. outside of class, it would have to be any memoir. I'm pretty much in love with memoir's.
ReplyDeleteI loved all the books I read in high school (I'm a geek I know) but I especially enjoyed "Like Water For Chocolate" and "Animal Farm". My favorite books that I read outside of school (simply for recreational reading) are: The Glass Castle, Kiffe Kiffe Tomorrow and the Kite Runner.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading 'Hamlet' back in high school.
ReplyDeleteStill, nowhere close to my favorites: Harry Potter series.
One of my favorites is To Kill A Mockingbird but I love to read so outside of school I have a bunch of different ones that I have really enjoyed.
ReplyDeleteThe best book I can remember reading in school was "East of Eden". I wouldn't go as far to say it is my all-time favorite book, it is up there! I also really like "The Great Gatsby".
ReplyDeleteThe best book that I have ever read in school in was, "Catcher in the Rye," and the best book that I have ever read outside of school was "Memoirs of a Geisha." :)
ReplyDeleteThe best book I have been required to read for school was probably, "The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge." or "Botany of Desire" The first is about the teachings a Mexican shaman gave to an American man Carlos Castenada about peyote and other hallucinogenic drugs. Much different from the typical reading you would expect in school.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book from school was Grapes of Wrath, outside of school I read a-lot, my favorite going back to when I was only 11 until 20 was definitely the Harry Potter books :)
ReplyDeleteI went through school mostly just skimming books or listening carefully in class. :) NOW, I am more of a reader. I like CS Lewis' "Till We Have Faces".
ReplyDeletei don't remember being very fond of any of the books that were assigned for me to read growing up. But currently my favorite book is Dear John by Nicholas Sparks!
ReplyDeleteI believe the best writing that I've read in school is Shakespeare. I took a class on Shakespeare and it really put into perspective the genius of his work.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I have a "best book" that I've read. So many different kinds of bests its hard to pin down which one wins.
"Catcher in a Rye"
ReplyDelete"Color me scarred"
Its been too long since I've read anything for class. Over the summer I enjoyed reading the harry potter series to my son before bed. He's read them but he still loves listening to them. We'll watch the movie and talk about the differences.
ReplyDeleteOut of all the books I have read for school, I would have to say all of them were pretty boring, except for "To Kill a Mockingbird"; this book caught my attention because of suspense = )... It is actually very similar to the best book I've read, because of it being mysterious.
ReplyDeleteThe best book I read in school was On the Road, Jack Kerouac. My favorite book is The Road Less Traveled.
ReplyDeleteThe best book I ever read in school was Fahrenheit 451.... it was similar to some of the books I like to read now in that they are set in the future and explore moral dilemmas in society. The books I read though have to have more action though lol
ReplyDeleteThe best book I ever read in school was The Great Gatsby. My favorite books are of course all of the Harry Potter books!.. and duh Twilight
ReplyDeletethe best book I ever read in school was "Where the Wild Things Are". Out of school, anything Grisham.
ReplyDeleteThe Kite Runner! Harry Potter is my all time favorite though!
ReplyDeleteI really was amazed at my world history book because the same cities and people from ancient times were the same as in the Bible! It just confirmed the truth of the Word. It is different from my favorite book, the Bible.
ReplyDeleteCarolann
The best book I ever read for school was the memoir,"The Glass Castle", by Jeannette Walls. After reading this book, I realized that some peoples' lives are more interesting, exciting, tragic, and funny than any work of fiction could ever be. Granted, this book was assigned for a memoir class, so I guess I'm kind of cheating the question. This book was nothing like the other books I usually read, which are all mainly works of fiction or how-to books on business and getting rich :D
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book that I read for school is, "Weathering Heights" in high school. Actually, at the time, I couldn't stand it, but then I read it again outside of school and really enjoyed it. Outside of school I don't think I have a favorite book, but I really enjoy reading books by Chelsea Handler. They're mindless, but hilarious.

ReplyDeleteDefinitely the Good Earth. My three all-time favorites are East of Eden, Gone with the Wind and Memoirs of a Geisha.

ReplyDeleteIt's hard for me to remember but....I did read "The Chronicles of Narnia" by C.S. Lewis which I loved and it was probably assigned to me. My favorite series that I would choose to read were the Nancy Drew books.
ReplyDeleteOh, I forgot, Pillars of the Earth is also very high on the list!
ReplyDelete3rd time is the charm. Woman on the Edge of Time by Marge Piercy! This book was read for my Population and Culture course taught by Dr. Bade here at CSUSM. It is one of my favorite books of all time because it pushes the limits on social construction. I went on to read more of her work and it is awesome!
ReplyDeleteI would have to say in school "A Rain of Gold" by Victor Villasenor, I really enjoyed the historical aspect of this book since it deals with the North County. Out of class has to be "Tuesday's at Morries".
ReplyDeleteThe best book I read for school was " The Great Gatsby". I have a read many other books that were not required for school that I would consider more of my favorites, but this book comes pretty close!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite book I ever read in school was "To Kill a Mockingbird." I thought Atticus Finch was the greatest dad teaching his kids about tolerance and courage. And who didn't find Scout to be one of the quirkiest girls ever!? I am not sure about my favorite book I've ever read. I'm still looking for it!!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading Wuthering Heights for a class, like someone else mentioned. As far as best outside of class reading, I am not sure if I would classify these as "best," but they are enjoyable: the Uglies series. Yes, it is totally Youth Lit, but fun none-the-less.
ReplyDeleteWhile attending SDSU in the 1980's, I took a Psychological Novel class. It was the best class I've ever taken. We read a novel by a Russian writer of the 1800's, Fyodor Dostoevsky (I believe it was Notes from the Underground). I have always remembered a quote from the book, "life is for a variety of sensations."
ReplyDeleteThe greatest book I've read is "Three Cups of Tea" which describes what I believe is one man's greatest contribution to the world which is still ongoing today in Pakistan and Afghanistan. He is building schools. I believe the students will be less likely to grow up hating the U.S.
The best book I ever read when I was a child was "the Lionheart Brothers" by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren. She was an amazing childrens' author.
ReplyDeleteAs an adult I read "Tuesdays with Morrie.: This book was an eyeopener to life, really took it to heart. While at UCSD I read "Because of Romek." This book is a Holocaust Survivors Memoir. This book was so heart breaking that I could never finish it. Despite that, it is the book that comes to mind first when I think about something that stood out and that had a great impact on me.
Blindness
ReplyDeleteBest School book I ever read was Plato's Symposium. It is a dialectic on the nature of Eros. Which is the male counterpart to Aphrodite. More or less the quest can been seen as an evaluation on the nature of love or as an investigation of man's desire to be immortal through their actions, be it invention or heroic deeds. It is different from a non school related book in that I was forced to read the text. It was guided reading done for the intent of personal/academic gain. Not just for fun.
